Union Street Players (USP), Pella's community theater, began in 1987 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in January, 1989. Since that time, USP has been dedicated to providing quality theatrical entertainment for Pella and our surrounding communities, and is proud to have been awarded the designation "Best Performing Group in Marion County" for several years running.

Each year USP brings three to four productions on our home stage, the Joan Kuyper Farver auditorium in the Pella Community Center. Each season includes:

  • a Winter production (in late February),
  • a Tulip Time production (every other Tulip Time; the first weekend in May)
  • a Summer production (late July/early August)
  • a Holiday production (early December).

Recent winter productions include Barefoot in the Park (2005), Morning's at Seven (2007), and The Odd Couple (2008).

Tulip Time productions such as Letters from Pella (2009), Tulip House (2007), The Dominie's Wife (2003 and 2006) have focused on Pella history, including winning entries from our Tulip Time playwriting contest.

The summer production is commonly a larger show. In recent years, these have been musicals: South Pacific (2004),The Fantasticks (2005), Music Man (2007), Pirates of Penzance (2008) and The Sound of Music (2009).

Recent Holiday productions have included Yes, Virginia, there Really is a Santa Claus (2005), The Christmas Post (2006), The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (2007), and Cheaper by the Dozen (2008).
