Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Xerxes, preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews. Esther 10:3 (MSG)

Like many people, I get a bit cynical when it comes to politicians. I don't doubt that many of them intend to "work for the good of the people" (or, at least, they start out that way).  I've observed, however, that politicians number one priority is solidifying their personal power base and looking out for themselves.

I find it interesting that Mordecai ended up with a reputation of caring for his people. What a legacy of a person's character. Even in my own area of influence, I'm prompted to ask myself if I'm following Jesus' command to look out for the needs of others - or am I doing what everyone else does in "looking out for number one?"

I agree with your comments today, Tom. I too want to be a person who puts others first. Politically, I believe that term limits would help keep "real" people in places of leadership instead of those embedded in politics for decades.
